NON-CONTACT Special Needs Hockey Program
The world of hockey can be fast paced and competitive often leaving individuals with developmental challenges off the ice and the team. With the Ice Frogs, players with developmental challenges are no longer sitting in the stands watching others play. Ice Frog players only need to have the desire to be on our team.
Personalized Approach

Our volunteers are of all ages and their commitments can range from assisting at fundraisers to working weekly on the ice with our players. Our volunteers are helping to bring out the athlete in these individuals.

Black Swamp Ice Frogs would not exist today without the time, energy, commitment and enthusiasm of our volunteers.
Team Building
Team-building activities provide individuals with tools that they need to interact with others in a meaningful way. "Teamwork games enhance listening skills and demonstrate how each member of a team brings a unique set of experiences, skills and knowledge to a collaborative process," says Jayson Wechter, the founder of San Francisco Treasure Hunts. "This emphasizes how a well-functioning team is stronger than the sum of its individual members."

Building Self Esteem

By doing a loved activity, the individual will want to interact.
Individuals, regardless of a person's special needs we work to bring out their potential; to unlock their potential requires time and engagement through play sessions. We base our program on the persons unique abilities, interests, and development. The practice is individualized to the players levels of development.

Everyone struggles when they learn something new. It’s important to explain to individuals with special needs that they are not necessarily struggling because they have a disability. They may be struggling because the game is difficult. This helps to reassure students who may be sensitive to their slower rate of learning. Tackling a challenge provides a wonderful chance to gain self-esteem. When players keep trying until they accomplish a goal, their self-esteem increases. Sometimes, the harder the goal, the greater the boost to self-esteem will be. The key to helping these players with special needs persevere is to break a difficult task into smaller steps to reach a larger goal.

There are no skill requirements to participate, and players are encouraged to learn at their own speed to score their goals. Players are now ABLE to experience the thrill of hockey and be a part of the hockey community.

Every player has the opportunity to learn at their own speed in a safe environment.
Players learn:
Good sportsmanship
Working with their teammates
How to skate
How to hold a stick
How to take shots and score goals
How to play hockey
Drop the Puck
